Leadership based on abundance
My top priority is to protect my limited resources. And the only way I’ll win is to take some of yours.
This philosophy of scarcity is so incredibly powerful that we don’t even recognize that it’s as pervasive as the air we breathe.
But there is indeed another way. Not just for our personal lives, but for our businesses as well. The philosophy of abundance is rapidly changing our world – and for the better.
I’m referring again to Kelly Weiss’s model of Heart-Driven Leadership:
Scarcity, of course, is based on fear. It results in competition, limitation, impatience, and the building of walls.
Abundance, on the other hand, results in generousness, trust, opportunities, and tearing down barriers.
I constantly experience this in my own business. I interact a great deal with other coaches in the area, including many who you’d think, are my competition. But I’ve discovered that a view of abundance serves all of us very well because it allows us to focus on delivering value to our customers rather than wasting effort on the competition.
In my case, it looks like:
- “There are plenty of customers out there who need our services”
- “We can ALL prosper”
- “I’m more likely to see success when I encourage and support other business coaches”
“I’m learning so much from other coaches and am enjoying my business”
Notice that these are all intentional choices. I could choose the opposite, if that’s the worldview that I wanted to live in.
But I want to live in – and build – a world of abundance and generosity.
